Cantina di Negrar Amarone della Valpolicella Classico DOCG 2012

I love this Amarone. Its earthy, rich cocoa and blackberry palette is to die for…

Cantina Valpolicella Negrar is a cooperative winery set in the founding home of Amarone in Negrar. Established in 1933, today the estate has around 700 hectares of vineyard producing excellent quality but affordable Amarone wines like this.

In the glass the wine is so dark – an almost black ruby. The smell is gorgeous; smoky cocoa and cooked blackberry fruits. The palette is expressive and complex, starting with those rich, chocolatey plums and cherries, which finish on earthy blackberry fruits, leather and cocoa flavours. It’s hearty and bold.

An excellent wine.

The Corvina grape itself is highly prized for its range of deep red colours and concentration; it is also perfect for appassimento, the local grape-drying technique that affords Valpolicella wines their unmistakable hint of cherries.

Serve with…

…while doubtlessly a fine partner with strong, creamy cheese like Comte, for me this Amarone is best paired with roast beef. In fact I’d say a bottle of this Amarone and a slow-roast fillet of beef is a near-perfect combination.
