Cantina Mesa Meno Buio Carignano del Sulcis DOC 2014

Jammy yet ultimately moreish, Meno Buio is Carignan having some fun

Carignano del Sulcis arrived as late as 1977 from the Spaniards, when they brought it over to the DOC in Sardinia. This particular incarnation is big and bold with plenty of tasty fruit carried on a wave of high alcohol.

That’s the main place the wine falls down. Those juicy raspberry and blackcurrant notes on the palette had the potential to be brimming with refreshment, yet it seems the wine is incapable of holding back the full force of heat the 14.0% alcohol is packing.

All this hotness leaves you with quite a jammy wine, not too dissimilar from some Eastern European fuller bodied reds (which you will find for much cheaper).

Having said that, this wine is ultimately fun and so easy drinking – perhaps even a little too easy. Ideal by itself.

Serve with…

…if you insist on having it alongside food, I’d go for hearty tomato based pasta dishes. Make sure they are hearty plates of food though or you’ll lose the taste in the wine’s heat!
