The Wine Advent: 3 December: Whites Under £10
The Wine Advent is a series of 25 posts in the run up to Christmas day where I will give you an insight into my favourite festive wines. Follow me on Twitter or Like my Facebook page to ensure you don’t miss opening up the advent!
The festive season hardly has to be a time to exclusively drink red wine. There’s plenty of white wines you can enjoy with Christmas food, in front of a warm fire, or on their own with family and friends.
Until 8 December you can buy Cvne Barrel Fermented Rioja Blanco (£7.86, Waitrose Cellar) for under £10. Creamy, toasty and nutty with a grapefruit note and good acidic backbone it’s both delightful on its own or with roast turkey. The wine tends to polarise drinkers a bit because of the level of oak and lees influence but the quality is stunning.
Viognier lovers can bag a bargain as well with wines like Leduc’s Viognier IGP Pays d’Oc (£8.75, Great Western Wine). Vibrant, greenish and full of apricot and peach. The finish is smooth and rounded. It’s a cracker with pigs in blankets.
If you’re feeling fruity and tropical, add a little dance to your Christmas with Torres Viña Esmeralda (£8.50, Waitrose Cellar). It’s a wine with passion fruitcot, pear and honey; lots of zippy spice. The wine is beautiful on its own, lightly chilled.
Want a true bargain? Hilltop Estate Eva’s Vineyard (£4.79, Waitrose Cellar) is frigthfully easy-drinking and fruity. Not a particularly complex wine but it’s richly fruit-driven and smooth.
And for zing you can’t go wrong with Sauvignon Blanc. You can bag the enduringly good quality Oyster Bay from Sainsbury’s at £10 on the dot, so well worth it!
